Origin · Field report · Subject 001

Six witnesses. Six different cats. One photograph.

This is the origin of RosettaAI — built by one person in Melbourne, in a studio, under supervision. The cat is called Sumac. He holds the title of C.A.T. I hold the title of staff. Nobody who has met him describes the same animal twice, and it has been going on long enough that it now has a file.

The origin

It started as a heads-up display for a helmet

A way to glance at speed and battery on an electric skateboard without taking my eyes off the road. That was the whole brief. Then it kept asking for more.

A local model here. A coordinate system there. A translator between one structure and another. Each piece was the smallest thing that would answer the question in front of it, and every one of them opened a larger question behind it.

At some point I realised I was building the thing I needed as a child and did not have: a system that listens carefully, translates precisely, and would have understood me.

It is called RosettaAI. I am Simon Harvey — a sole trader in Melbourne, Australia. No lab. No team. No billion-dollar grant. A studio, an unreasonable amount of coffee, and a cat who supervises every commit from a position no one can agree on.

The subject

Registry entry: Sumac

The title is real, in the sense that nobody has successfully disputed it.

Title
C.A.T.Chief Architecture Tester. Reviews by presence rather than by comment. No pull request has survived his attention unchanged; none has ever received a note.
Reporting line
InvertedHe holds the title of C.A.T. I hold the title of staff. This was not negotiated.
Recorded weight
InconsistentThe vet's file lists a different figure at every visit. She has stopped remarking on it. She describes him as healthy — aggressively healthy.
Recorded appearance
ContestedSix amendments on the council's registration. Each correction contradicts the one before it. The council has stopped amending.
Method
DirectDoes not open doors so much as cause them to reconsider. Does not sit on the keyboard; the keyboard presents itself.
Compensation
SettledPaid in full, twice daily, on a schedule he set and enforces without fail.
The reading

So I pointed the thing I built at him

RosettaAI does not compress; it decomposes. It takes a structure apart until what is left is the smallest set of pieces that can rebuild it. If it has structure, it has grammar. If it has grammar, this reads it. A cat has structure. This was never going to be the hard part.

The instrument is not what failed here. It read him in full, in about the time it takes to read a paragraph — and then, per the Law of Consent, it declined to say what it found, because the subject did not agree to be profiled. It has the right to refuse. It will say no, and walk away. That is clause VI of the manifesto, working exactly as written, on a cat, against my direct instruction. Annoying. Correct.
